Matua, the first producer of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, is using innovative thermographic label technology to bring the symbol of Matua’s story to life when a wine is chilled at its optimal drinking temperature.

Now available in Australia, the new Matua Chill Check labels make it easy to identify when the Matua Regional Series Sauvignon Blanc and Matua First Frost Sauvignon Blanc are as crisp and aromatic as their winemaker intended them to be.

The thermo inks used in each Matua Chill Check label activates the appearance of a snowflake and the colour-changing of a large Matua Ta Moko on the front label, when the wine is chilled to perfection.

“As pioneers of the variety, it made sense for us to use technology at Matua to maximise their enjoyment”

While at room temperature, the label is very similar to what consumers are used to.

Matua Senior Winemaker, Chris Darling said the Chill Check label is about using innovation to showcase the flavour, freshness and drinkability of the wines.

“We wanted to make it simple for people to recognise the best temperature to enjoy their wine – a key component for showcasing the quality encased within the bottle.”

The Matua winemaking team conducted extensive trials in the winery to determine the optimal drinking temperature for each wine – with the winery’s Sauvignon Blanc being best suited to a colder temperature of seven degrees – ensuring the aromatic, punchy characters are showcased.

“New Zealand wines, in particular Sauvignon Blanc, are renowned for their freshness and vibrancy. As pioneers of the variety, it made sense for us to use technology at Matua to maximise their enjoyment,” Darling said.

Matua heads into 2018 after a successful few years on the world stage.

Named New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the 2016 International Wine and Spirit Competition, the Matua Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc went on to achieve Double Gold at the 2017 San Francisco International Wine Competition and was awarded 90 points by Wine Spectator Magazine for the 2016 vintage.

Wines featuring the new Matua Chill Check label are now available from select retailers nationwide.
