GRANT Burge’s 19th vintage (2009) Meshach Shiraz epitomises old vine intensity and longevity.

The fruit was handpicked from vines close to 100 years old, creating a deep and concentrated wine with the ability to age gracefully just like Meshach William Burge who passed away in 1942, aged 99.

“My flagship wine is close to my heart, not only because of its iconic status and exceptional qualities, but also for historic reasons,” Grant Burge said.

“My great grandfather was a central figure in establishing the Burge Family’s winemaking tradition.

“Aged 11 he moved from Hillcot in Wiltshire, England with his family to the Barossa where they established a thriving viticultural wheat and sheep property near Lyndoch.”

Burge says this wine is a tribute to Meshach Burge and what he achieved throughout his life. He lived to be 99, just one year off receiving a letter from the Queen, showing true longevity in life. “So what better name for a long-living wine than Meshach,” he adds.

The 2009 was a dry vintage with lower than average rainfall over the growing season. But the lack of rain contributed to the exceptional concentration of flavour in the grapes and overall conditions leading up to harvest were near perfect, producing a balanced and elegant wine.

Grant expects the 2009 will be one of the great vintages of the decade and a wine that will have longevity for 20 years or more.

The 2009 Meshach Shiraz has already received a gold medal at the Sydney International Wine Competition and as always has been carefully cellared for five years before release to allow the intense flavours to develop further.

Meshach continues to hold a leadership position amongst Australian and Barossa Shiraz and is listed on each of the main Australian wine classifications including Wine Ark’s Australia’s Most Collected Wine list, Langton’s Fine Wine Classification and the MW Wines Top 100 Australian Wines.

The wine has a retail price of $180.00 per bottle and is available from Grant Burge Wines. P: 61 8 8563 3700. E: admin@grantburgewines.com.au.
