ENTRIES are open for the annual NSW Small Winemakers Show 2014 which is this year celebrating its 23rd anniversary.

Judging will commence on Monday 25 August and conclude on Wednesday 27 August at the Forbes Youth & Community Centre.

The show, sponsored by Winetitles among others,  is open to all NSW and ACT wine producers who crush a maximum of 500 tonnes annually.

The show, however, is not open to any winery that is wholly owned or part owned by a large wine producer.

Last year, the event attracted 564 entries from 94 small producers across the state, with 42 per cent of entries awarded a medal.

Entries for the 2014 show close Monday 21 July.

This year De Iuliis Wines owner and winemaker Mike De Iuliis will take the reins as the new chairperson of judges.

De Iuliis was a finalist in the 2013 Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker Of The Year awards and has been involved in the show for almost 10 years.

“It’s and honour to be chairman of this show following great industry leaders such as the late Chris Killeen, Lester Jesberg and Andrew Thomas,” he said.

“The NSW Small Winemakers Show gives producers across the state an opportunity to benchmark their wines against their peers, and I intend to uphold the high standard of judging at the show, where any medal here can be placed up there with the best in the country.”

The judging panel boasts some of the young guns of NSW wine, including five Len Evans Tutorial scholars.

For the first time the judging panels will be led by female panel chairs including Stargazer Wines Tasmania owner and winemaker Sam Connew, and incoming chairperson of judges at the Sydney Royal Wine Show and wine writer Deb Pearce.

The senior judges are:

  • Jeff Byrne – Agnew Wines, Pokolbin
  • Nick Spencer – Eden Road Wines, Canberra District
  • Gwyn Olsen – Briar Ridge Wines, Mountview
  • Nick O’Leary – Nick O’Leary Wines, Canberra District

The exhibitors’ tastings will be held on Friday 29 August between 4.30pm and 8.30pm at the Forbes Youth & Community Centre, Battye Street, Forbes.

The tasting will be open to the public from 6:30pm.

The presentation dinner will be held on Saturday 20 September with the venue to be advised.
